What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels use a chemical solution to slough off outer skin cell layers to reveal the smoother, even-toned, and younger-looking skin underneath. Chemical peels effectively eliminate many common signs of aging without pain, invasive procedures, or significant downtime in many cases. Dr. Musgrove tailors chemical peels to your individualized needs.

What are the benefits of chemical peels?

Chemical peel treatments at Wellness Revived Medical Spa and Aesthetics offer the following anti-aging benefits:

  • Fewer wrinkles and fine fines
  • Improved skin tone
  • Enhanced skin texture
  • Fewer sun and age spots
  • Less acne
  • Reduced scarring
  • Smoother skin
  • Increased collagen production
  • Fewer freckles
  • Lower risk of precancerous spots
  • Less melasma (dark patches)

The microtrauma that results from chemicals applied to your skin increases new cell production during the healing process.

Which chemical peels are best for me?

Chemical peels are generally safe for all skin types, but there is an increased risk of hyperpigmentation with darker skin tones.

The main three types of chemical peels are the following:

Light peel

A light chemical peel provides subtle improvements by removing the outermost skin cell layers. The recovery time is hours to days with little or no downtime.

Medium peel

Medium peels remove the outermost and upper middle skin layers for more dramatic results. Recovery time is typically a week, and some downtime is needed.

Deep peel

Deep chemical peels produce the most dramatic results, as the chemical solution penetrates lower middle skin layers. Recovery time is longer. However, deep chemical peels are usually a one-time treatment.

Dr. Musgrove discusses your medical history, examines your skin, and reviews your goals to determine which chemical peel is right for you.

What should I expect during chemical peels?

Prepare for a chemical peel by protecting your skin from the sun and avoiding tanning beds. Apply topical products to your skin if asked to, avoid retinoids, and stop taking certain medicines. You must not have any skin infections, lesions, or open sores.

While you rest comfortably, Dr. Musgrove cleans your skin and numbs it. Deep chemical peels may require general anesthesia. He applies a light, medium, or deep chemical peel solution to your skin.

Chemicals commonly used include trichloroacetic acid, glycolic acid, carbolic acid (phenol), lactic acid, and salicylic acid. Dr. Musgrove eventually rinses off the chemicals or neutralizes them.

What happens afterward?

Follow all post-chemical peel instructions, which vary based on the type of peel you’ve undergone. Your skin might be red like a sunburn, swollen, flaky, crusted, stinging, or blistering during the healing process. Apply any ointments or take medications as directed.
