What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical skin exfoliation technique. It’s minimally invasive yet yields impressive and lasting results. Microdermabrasion removes the outermost layers of skin, revealing a layer of fresh, healthy skin cells.

Microdermabrasion improves the appearance of:

  • Wrinkles
  • Lines
  • Acne scarring
  • Stretch marks
  • Sun damage
  • Melasma
  • Age spots
  • Uneven texture

One thing that makes microdermabrasion so popular is the opportunity to address numerous skin issues with the same treatment. It’s also a great option if you’re not a good candidate for chemical peels.

How does microdermabrasion work?

Microdermabrasion works by manually removing dead skin cells using a medical device equipped with an abrasive surface. It is sometimes spoken of as a way to “sand” off the outermost layer of skin cells. A vacuum system removes those cells as they’re exfoliated. When layers of skin are removed, the underlying cells are revealed.

In addition, the process prompts your body to respond with its natural healing powers, leading to new collagen and elastin production and tighter, smoother skin.

Is microdermabrasion painful?

Most men and women who have microdermabrasion don’t experience significant discomfort during the procedure. Others report a mild to moderate burning sensation. If you have especially sensitive skin, speak with your provider about using an anesthetic cream prior to the session.

You can resume normal activities as soon as your appointment ends. You may need to stop using topical acne medications for a day or two to give your skin a chance to adjust.

You may notice some minor inflammation and redness for a day or two after your procedure. It’s important to protect your skin during this time, as the newly revealed cells are vulnerable to UV damage and irritation. Wearing a good quality sunscreen is a must, and can also extend the results of microdermabrasion.

You’ll begin to see improvements right away, although it may take a few days before the full effects are apparent. During your initial consultation, your provider estimates how many treatments you’ll need to reach your goals.
